# University application deadlines in Germany
## Winter & summer intake timeline for international students

>Learn the real university application deadlines in Germany for the Winter and Summer semester. Understand uni-assist timing, early deadline examples, and when international students should start preparing.

## What is the application deadline for universities in Germany?

Every year, many international students applying to German universities are not sure when to start and what are the important deadlines. The honest answer is: there is **no one common deadline for all German universities**.

Germany has two intakes:

- Winter semester, which usually starts in October
- Summer semester, which usually starts in April

For many universities, the common application pattern is roughly early May to 15 July for the winter semester and early December to 15 January for the summer one. But that is only a broad pattern, not a rule. Universities and programmes can have different deadlines, and some master’s programmes may close much sooner. Uni-assist also says students should apply at least 8 weeks before the deadline if possible.

That is why students who wait to submit their application right before the “final deadline” often create unnecessary pressure for themselves.

## The official deadline is not your real deadline

A lot of students make the same mistake: they think they can start preparing once the portal opens.

In many cases that is too late.

From our experience, if you want to start in the Winter semester, your planning should begin around **13 to 15 months earlier**. That means if your targeted programme starts in October 2027, you should ideally begin your research around August or September 2026.

### Why so early?

Because the application is not only about filling a form. You may need time for:

- IELTS or German language tests
- APS certificate, if required
- translating and notarizing transcripts and other documents
- passport renewal, if required
- VPD or uni-assist processing
- shortlisting the right universities
- writing your Statement of purpose (SOP) and resume

The students who get into trouble are usually not the academically weak students. They are the late planners.

## Winter intake vs Summer intake in Germany

In practice, **Winter is the main intake** in Germany.

That is when most students start their studies, and it is also when many more degree options are available. DAAD notes that only around one quarter of bachelor’s programmes can also be started in the summer semester, which shows how much more limited Summer can be, especially for bachelor’s applicants.

The Summer intake may still be a good option, in case for some reason you have missed the deadlines for the summer one. **In some cases, it may even mean less competition**. But students should not assume that every university or every programme is available in Summer.

## There is no one deadline for all universities

This is one of the biggest misunderstandings students have.

Some think:

- all universities close applications on **15 July**
- all applications work the same way
- uni-assist can be done in the last 2 weeks
- every programme follows the same timeline

None of that is safe to assume.

Here are a few real examples:

- **University of Bonn** follows the common pattern: Winter applications from early June to 15 July, and Summer from early December to 15 January.
- **TU Dortmund** shows why students cannot rely on the 15 July date. For non-EU applicants to English-taught master programmes, Winter applications can run from the beginning of January to 15 May.
- **Freie Universität Berlin** already has the current Winter 2026/27 deadline pages online in March, and some master degrees listed via official DAAD programme pages show Winter application deadlines such as 31 May.
- **Munich University of Applied Sciences** makes another important point clear: for Winter, the application period may run until 31 July, but the uni-assist pre-check or APS must be done earlier.

This is why students should stop asking, **“What is the German university application deadline?”**

The better question is: **“What is the deadline for my exact programme, at my exact university, and what needs to happen before that?”**

## The safest timeline for the Winter intake

If your target is the **Winter semester**, this is a practical planning timeline:

### 13–15 months before you want to start your studies

- Start researching courses and universities.
- Do not only look at rankings. Check course content, eligibility, language requirements, and whether the university uses uni-assist as its application portal.

### 12–13 months before

- Start IELTS or German test preparation.
- If APS is required for your country, begin planning for that as well.

### 11–12 months before

- Shortlist your universities into ideal, realistic, and safe options. This step should not be left for the last moment. A good shortlist needs time.

### 10–11 months before

- Apply for APS if needed and collect all required documents.
- This is also when students often lose time because they still have transcript issues, missing certificates, or VPD confusion.

### When the application portal opens

- Do not wait. **If the application portal opens today, try to finalise and submit the application within the first 2 weeks.**

That is one of the best habits students can follow.

## Uni-assist needs earlier planning

This part is very important.

Many students think:
*"If the university deadline is 15 July, then I can send my application to uni-assist on 10 July."*

That is very risky.

Uni-assist itself recommends applying as early as possible, ideally at least 8 weeks before the university’s deadline, so there is still time to correct missing documents if needed. It repeats the same advice in its document-upload guidance and checklist materials.

So if your university deadline is 15 July, a much safer uni-assist application date is around mid-May, not the last week of June or in July.

## The students who miss deadlines most often

From experience, two types of students struggle the most.

### The dream-university-only student

This student is too focused on one or two famous universities. By the time they realise those options are highly competitive, the deadlines for other realistic universities have already passed.

### The late document collector

This student keeps saying, “I still have time.” Then APS, language test results, translations, or uni-assist processing create delays and stress.

The problem is not only missing one deadline. The bigger problem is losing a whole intake because of poor planning.

## Final advice

If you remember only one thing from this article, it should be this:

**The final application deadline is not your working deadline.**

In Germany, deadlines vary by university, by programme, and sometimes even by applicant group. Winter is the main intake, Summer is more limited, and uni-assist needs much earlier action than many students expect.

So do not plan backward from the last date on the website.

Plan forward from the moment the portal opens.

That is how students stay calm, avoid mistakes, and keep more university options open.
