dMAT exam for Indian master’s applicants to Germany

Last updated: Jul 7, 2026 By Vikas

Everything Indian students need to know about the new dMAT exam for Master’s applications to Germany, including eligibility, exemptions, dates, and fees.

If you are an Indian student planning to start a master’s degree in Germany in the summer semester 2027 or later, you may have heard about a new application requirement called dMAT exam.

dMAT is a new standardised academic aptitude test for Indian graduates applying through APS India for a Master’s programme in Germany. It does not replace APS, anabin or formal recognition of your previous degrees, and it does not replace the admission decision of German universities. It simply adds a layer of academic screening, which helps German universities efficiently filter and identify top-tier talent for highly competitive master’s programmes.

What is the dMAT exam for Germany?

dMAT stands for Digital Master Assessment Test. It is a standardised academic aptitude test designed to evaluate cognitive ability, analytical thinking, and logical reasoning skills rather than memorised knowledge.

The test assesses whether applicants have the academic reasoning skills needed for the demands of a German Master’s programme.

dMAT is being introduced in the summer of 2026 by APS India and g.a.s.t. the German organisation responsible for tests such as TestDaF. The test is administered by g.a.s.t., while APS India continues to handle academic document verification.

APS India explains that the dMAT is being rolled out step by step for selected groups of Master’s applicants from India, namely graduates from the fields of:

  • Engineering,
  • Business & management,
  • Commerce, accounting, finance and economics.

Do all Indian students need dMAT for Germany?

You need dMAT only if you are applying for a Master’s programme in Germany, your previous degree falls within one of the affected fields listed above, and your application relates to the summer semester 2027 intake or a later start.

Who is exempt?

If you are applying for a Bachelor’s degree you do not need to take the dMAT.

If you already hold a valid APS certificate, or have completed the APS online registration, or have shipped all APS documents before 29 June 2026 you do not need to take the dMAT.

Applicants who completed their APS online registration on or after 29 June 2026, or have shipped their APS application documents on or after 29 June 2026 are required to submit the dMAT certificate together with their APS application documents, provided that their previous degree falls within one of the affected fields. APS India states that the first dMAT certificates will be available from 12 October 2026, and the dMAT introduction is intended for applications connected with summer semester 2027 and later intakes.

Students in officially confirmed exchange programmes, double-degree programmes, or university partnership programmes are exempt from dMAT. To claim this exemption, submit the relevant confirmation from your home institution, German partner institution, or programme coordinator, including your group number, together with the rest of your APS documentation.

Here is a quick overview to help you decide if you need to prepare for the dMAT exam:

Did you already complete the APS registration before 29 June 2026?You are exempt from taking the dMAT

Which fields are affected by dMAT?

Applicants are affected if their previous degree, major, honours subject, branch or specialisation clearly falls within one of the listed fields below:

  • Engineering,
  • Business & management,
  • Commerce, accounting, finance and economics.

APS India may classify related or mixed fields in one of the above groups, based on the official degree title, branch, major, honours subject or specialisation shown in the academic documents.

Broad field groupExamples of Bachelor degrees that require a dMAT
EngineeringBachelor of Engineering, Bachelor of Technology or equivalent Engineering degrees where the branch is clearly Engineering
Commerce, accounting, finance, economicsBachelor of Commerce, Accounting, Finance, Banking, Taxation, Economics, Financial Economics
Business, managementBachelor of Business Administration, Bachelor of Business Management, Bachelor of Management Studies, Business Administration, Business Management, Business Analytics

The official wording on your degree certificate, transcript, marksheets or university documents is decisive. The final classification will be based on the official list of affected study fields published by APS India. Please refer to the list dMAT – Affected Fields List to check if your previous degree is affected by the dMAT requirement.

What about other interdisciplinary and mixed fields?

For interdisciplinary, mixed, or emerging fields (such as Data Science, Business Analytics, Industrial Engineering, FinTech, Engineering Management, or AI), navigating the new dMAT mandate requires a bit of close attention.

Because these degrees cross traditional academic boundaries, whether you need to take the test comes down to on the title or field of your Bachelor’s degree, not the Master’s program you are applying to.

If your Bachelor’s degree falls under any blend of the main affected fields, you will likely be required to take the exam. For example:

  • Industrial Engineering / Engineering Management: Because your foundational degree heavily involves Engineering, it falls under the mandate for dMAT.

  • Business Analytics / FinTech / E-Commerce: Because your background is rooted into Business, Management, or Commerce, you need to take the dMAT.

  • Data Science / Computer Science / IT: These fields are actively included under the technical and engineering umbrella for the dMAT.

APS India maintains a detailed affected-fields list, so be sure to check if you programme is listed there.

Does dMAT replace APS, anabin or degree recognition?

No, dMAT does not replace any of those. It is an additional element in the APS process. APS India will continue to verify the authenticity and formal plausibility of academic documents according to the existing APS procedure.

APS India strongly advises applicants to check the status of their previous higher education institution and degree in the anabin database before registering for dMAT and before submitting the APS application. Since the dMAT certificate cannot compensate for a degree or institution that is not formally recognised.

QuestionAnswer
Does dMAT replace APS?No
Does APS still verify documents?Yes
Who administers dMAT?g.a.s.t.
Who handles the APS verification?APS India
Is the dMAT result reflected on the APS certificate?Yes, for affected applicants
Who checks the recognition status of my previous degree and institution?anabin

For a complete guide on the APS process check our APS certificate explained article.

Does a high dMAT score guarantee admission to a German university?

No, your dMAT score alone does not guarantee admission. APS India explains that German higher education institutions decide independently how they assess the dMAT certificate in their admission procedures. A dMAT certificate does not replace all other documents needed for an admission decision of the university.

German universities will still look at your:

  • Bachelor’s grades
  • Degree relevance
  • APS certificate
  • dMAT certificate, if required
  • English or German language certificate
  • CV
  • Motivation letter
  • Work experience, if relevant
  • If all programme-specific requirements are covered

APS India also states that a low dMAT score does not automatically lead to refusal of the APS certificate or an application rejection from the universities for which you plan to apply.

For the full application process, check our complete article on how to apply to German universities.

How is the dMAT structured?

The dMAT is not a test of purely memorized factual knowledge. Instead, it measures cognitive, analytical, and problem-solving abilities. The test consists of two modules: a core module and a subject module.

The core module tests your general study aptitude, logical thinking, mathematical equations, and pattern recognition. The subject module or general academic module evaluates your ability to apply analytical skills to academic, real-world problems or field-specific scenarios.

dMAT is a digital multiple-choice test in English, taken at licensed test centers. The total test time is approximately 3.5 hours, including one break. The dMAT format was developed in cooperation with the Universities of Ulm and Kassel.

Our insider tip

If you are wondering how to prepare for dMAT Germany, start by understanding the test structure first. Then use the official preparation materials and sample tasks you can find in the dMAT website. If you need more guidance and assistance, join our dedicated webinar session, where we will explain what the structure of the test is and what are good preparation strategies to achieve a high score.

How is the dMAT scored and what does the result mean?

The dMAT result shows two types of information: a dMAT score and a percentile rank. The dMAT score is reported on a 0 to 200 scale with a mean of 100. The percentile rank shows how many test-takers scored equal or lower. Universities decide independently how to use these results.

Core and Subject module results are reported separately, but you also see your total score results from adding both values. Once issued, the dMAT certificate is valid indefinitely.

Score elementWhat it means
dMAT score per moduleon a 0 - 200 scale, a score around 100 means your performance perfectly mirrors the average test-taker. The maximum total score is 400.
A score of 50 to 150 on one module is the average rangeMost test-takers score within this window divided into a lower-average and upper-average range
A score of 150 to 195 on one module is above averageThis indicates strong logical and analytical reasoning skills.
A score of 200 on a module is an excellent scoreA score of 200 is reserved for exceptional performance, typically representing the top 2% of all test-takers.
Percentile rankThe percentile rank tells a German university exactly where you stand relative to every other graduate who took the test.

How should Indian students prepare for the dMAT?

dMAT preparation should focus on reasoning, transfer and application, not memorising theory. The Core module checks unfamiliar task types such as figure sequences, mathematical equations and Latin squares. The Subject module, called the General Academic Module for India, tests how you apply these skills in problem-solving tasks.

Start researching the material early as this is a new requirement and you may not be familiar with these question types. Preferably, use official sample materials and videos from the dMAT website.

If your German university deadline is close, you should plan backward. The dMAT certificate may be needed for the APS documentation process if the requirement applies to you. To successfully plan your application and understand all university deadlines, read our University application deadlines in Germany article.

Where can Indian students take the dMAT?

The dMAT will be offered at selected licensed test centres in India. APS India lists the following cities where you will be able to take the test:

  • Ahmedabad,
  • Bengaluru,
  • Bhopal,
  • Chandigarh,
  • Chennai,
  • Kolkata,
  • Mananthavady,
  • Mumbai,
  • New Delhi,
  • Pune.

The final list of available test centres will be shown to you during the registration process. APS India says test centre availability depends on available seats and that they cannot reserve dMAT test seats. Test centre booking is handled by g.a.s.t. on a first-come, first-served basis. So, once registration opens, do not wait long if you have a preferred location.

How much does dMAT cost?

APS India states that the current dMAT exam fee is €150.00 (approx. ₹16,000 INR), charged by g.a.s.t. and payable during registration.

Payment details are shown on the dMAT website during registration.

This fee is separate from other Germany application costs such as APS, university application fees, language tests, courier costs, blocked account, visa fee, health insurance and travel.

Students from the affected fields should include the dMAT fee in their application budget from the start.

Can I retake the dMAT exam to improve my score?

Yes, you are allowed to register and sit for the exam again if you want to improve your score. However, there are three things to consider, before jumping into a retake:

How does a retake impact your application timeline?

The dMAT is not an on-demand exam you can take every week. It is conducted in specific seasonal testing cycles. If you decide to retake it, you will have to wait for the next official test cycle, which could delay your university application by an entire semester.

Every retake will cost you

Every single attempt at the dMAT requires you to pay the full exam fee of €150. It is an expensive test to retake casually.

APS should update your certificate

Because your dMAT score is tied directly to your APS profile, if you take the exam a second time to get a better score, you will have to coordinate with APS India to ensure your updated certificate reflects your new, higher score before you apply to universities.

Our advice regarding retakes?

Don’t book a retake immediately, if you are disappointed with your score. Check the admission requirements for all German Master’s programmes you are targeting. If they just require the dMAT as a mandatory document check but do not list a strict minimum score, your current score might be perfectly fine to proceed with!

What mistakes should Indian students avoid with dMAT?

Most dMAT mistakes happen because students treat it as either too scary or too simple of a test. It is neither. It is an important requirement for the impacted applicants, but it is still only one part of the Germany application journey.

MistakeWhy it matters
Thinking dMAT replaces APSAPS verification still continues, dMAT is just an add-on
Thinking dMAT replaces anabinRecognition of your previous degree and institution must still be checked
Checking the intended Master’s field onlydMAT depends on your previous degree field
Waiting too long for test centre bookingSeats may be limited
Assuming Winter 2026/27 is affectedThe intake mostly impacted by this requirement is summer 2027 onward
Thinking a high dMAT score guarantees admissionUniversities decide admission based on multiple criteria
Thinking a low score automatically ends everythingAPS says dMAT is not a pass/fail test, and you will still obtain an APS certificate

Final checklist before registering for dMAT

Before registering for dMAT, ask yourself these questions:

  • Am I applying for a Master’s programme in Germany?
  • Is my intake summer semester 2027 or later?
  • Is my previous degree from India?
  • Does my previous official degree field fall under an affected field group?
  • Have I checked the official APS India affected-fields PDF?
  • Is my case a borderline field such as BCA, IT, AI, Data Science, Biotechnology or sector-specific Management?
  • Have I checked anabin for my previous institution and degree?
  • Have I checked whether I qualify for a transitional exemption?
  • Have I planned and registered for the dMAT test before APS completion?
  • Have I budgeted the €150 test fee?
  • Do I understand that dMAT does not replace APS, anabin or university admission?

If you can answer these questions clearly, your preparation and outcome for the dMAT exam becomes much less confusing.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

dMAT is the Digital Master Assessment Test for some Indian Master’s applicants applying to Germany. It is a standardised academic aptitude test introduced as an additional element in the APS documentation process. It is administered by g.a.s.t., while APS India continues to verify academic documents.

dMAT is mandatory only for selected Indian Master’s applicants whose previous degree falls within one of the affected fields: Engineering, Commerce, Accounting, Finance, Economics, Business or Management.

It applies to candidates who want to start their studies in the summer semester 2027 or a later intake, unless a transitional exemption applies.

dMAT does not replace APS India. APS India continues to verify the authenticity and formal plausibility of academic documents. The dMAT certificate is an additional academic test result issued by g.a.s.t. and becomes part of APS documentation for affected applicants.
dMAT does not replace anabin or the formal degree recognition process. APS India advises applicants to check the anabin status of their previous institution and degree before registering for dMAT and before submitting APS documents. A dMAT certificate cannot compensate for missing formal recognition.
dMAT does not guarantee admission to a German university. German universities decide independently how they assess each application. The dMAT certificate is usually considered together with grades, APS, language certificates, degree relevance and programme-specific requirements.

Winter Semester 2026/27 is not the main target of the dMAT introduction. If you already hold a valid APS certificate, or have completed the APS online registration, or have sent all APS documents before 29 June 2026 you do not need to take the dMAT.

APS India says the first dMAT certificates will be available from 12 October 2026. So the introduction is intended for applications connected with Summer Semester 2027 and later Master’s intakes.

BCA is not automatically covered by the dMAT requirement according to the APS India affected-fields guidance. However, APS India may classify related or mixed cases based on official degree title, branch, major, specialisation, transcripts and recognition rules. Students should check the dMAT – Affected Fields List.
Standalone Data Science, Artificial Intelligence, AI and Machine Learning, Cyber Security, IT or Computer Science without an Engineering designation are not automatically covered. They may become relevant only if APS India classifies the official degree under an affected field group.

The dMAT test fee in 2026 is €150.00 according to APS India.

The fee is charged by g.a.s.t. and paid online during registration. Students should budget this in addition to fees for the APS certification, university applications, language tests, visa costs, blocked account and travel expenses.

Indian students can take dMAT at selected licensed test centres in India. Planned cities include Ahmedabad, Bengaluru, Bhopal, Chandigarh, Chennai, Kolkata, Mananthavady, Mumbai, New Delhi and Pune. The final available test centre list is shown during registration.

A good dMAT score for German universities depends on each university’s own admission rules.

The dMAT score is reported on a 0 - 200 scale for each of the two modules, with a mean of 100. In total your score may range between 0 and 400.

A low score does not automatically lead to APS refusal. The certificate documents test participation and results, while universities decide how much weight to give your score.

The dMAT exam is a computer-based test conducted at licensed g.a.s.t. test centres in India.

It is not a home-based online test. Test centre booking is handled through the dMAT registration process, and seats are usually available on a first-come, first-served basis.

dMAT does not replace the GRE for German universities. dMAT is part of the APS documentation process for selected Indian Master’s applicants. GRE is a separate test, and some German programmes may still require or consider it depending on their own admission rules. Always check the specific university requirements.
dMAT is not required for Bachelor’s applicants to Germany. The current dMAT requirement is introduced specifically for selected Master’s level applicants from India in affected fields for summer semester 2027 or later intakes. PhD applicants are also not affected under the current procedure.
